Abstract<\/strong>:\u00a0This article is dedicated to the figure of Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor A.A.\u00a0Buriachok, a long-time researcher at the Department of Lexicology and Lexicography of the Potebnia Institute of Linguistics at the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and later at the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (since 2017, this structural unit has been called the Department of Lexicology, Lexicography and Structural and Mathematical Linguistics). The article considers the contribution of A.A.\u00a0Buriachok as a scholar in various areas of Ukrainian linguistics: lexicology and lexicography of the modern Ukrainian language, its vocabulary from the perspective of the linguistic units\u2019 origins, and language culture.<\/p>\n

Special attention is paid to the scholar’s monographs \u201cTerms of Kinship and Affinity in the Ukrainian Language\u201d (1961) and \u201cFormation of the Common Fund of Socio-Political Vocabulary of the East Slavic Languages\u201d (1983), which continue to hold undeniable theoretical and methodological significance for contemporary researchers. In these works, A.A. Buriachok offers a comprehensive analysis of the form, semantics, stylistic potential, and functional tendencies of words and expressions drawing on historical monuments of the Ukrainian language, dialectal materials, literary texts, and a wide spectrum of Slavic and non-Slavic languages. Nationally marked terms are further highlighted. The usage of the terminological phrase socio-political lexis<\/em> is argued as distinct from societal-political lexis<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The article also describes the scholar\u2019s direct involvement in preparing a revised, nationally centered edition of the Ukrainian orthography in 1990 and 1993.<\/p>\n

In addition to his academic achievements, Professor Buriachok\u2019s active contribution to public and cultural work aimed at the full institutional affirmation of the Ukrainian language is rightly stressed.<\/p>\n
