However, at that time, the foundations of corpus linguistic policies were laid as well. The Ukrainian linguists took care of its development and implementation.

Change of the Ukrainian language status exacerbated such corpus problems as the lack of spelling norms and unified spelling, functional limitations associated with the failure of national terminology, the arbitrariness of the use of words. The introduction of the Ukrainian language into the education system was complicated by the lack of theoretical development in the main branches of scientific linguistics, the lack of methodological literature. All this in a complex has constituted the assessment essence of language condition at that time.

The greatest achievements were in the codification of spelling and the development of linguistic research. Ukrainian linguistic schools began to form in the UAS, the activities of which were interrupted in the late 20’s and early 1930’s with the onset of totalitarianism in the USSR.

There are grounds to qualify the activities of the ministerial terminological commissions as a manifestation of the state corpus language policy, as well as the Terminological Commission at the State Chancellery, the Spelling Terminology Commission at the UAS, the publication of terminological dictionaries initiated by the state and circular instructions on the use of the Ukrainian language in clerical work.

The decision of the Ministry of Education to create a Spelling Commission was an indication of the fact that spelling problems fell into the public interest. Professors-linguists Ye. Tymchenko, S. Smal-Stotsky, M. Grunsky, A. Loboda, Lukianenko, privatdocents T. Sushytsky, I. Ogienko and other well-known specialists were invited to work there. The rules approved by the Commission were approved by the Ministry of Education as compulsory for educational institutions and school textbooks. The main spelling tendencies have been embodied in numerous grammar, reference books, and hand books for those who were engaged in mastering the Ukrainian language.

Keywords: language policy, status planning, corpus planning, official language, history of Ukrainian linguistics.

REFERENCES

Arendarenko, A.
