Abstract: The article is devoted to the historical and etymological analysis of the oikonyms Holendra and Holendra within the modern Ternopil and Vinnytsia regions, as well as the names of the former villages Olendra Strusivski in Ternopil region and Holinderna (Holendernya) in Vinnytsia region. The above names are characterized among numerous counterparts in other regions of Ukraine, in particular in Volyn, as well as in Belarus and Poland. The oikonyms Holendry, Olendry (Strusivski) (‹ Holendry with the loss of the initial G– in the Polish-speaking environment) are formally related to the phonetically adapted Polish holendry ‛colony (Dutch)’ ‹ holender (holander, olander, olender, olęder) ‛settler from Holland’, as indicated by the lexemes holender ‛hollandets’, holenderskiy ‛hollandskiy’ recorded in the Ukrainian dictionary, which, however, does not provide unambiguous grounds to link them directly with Dutch immigrants. The late chronology (19th century) of most of these names rather indicates the establishment of these settlements on the model of colonies under Dutch law. The interpretation of the Ukrainian oikonyms Holendra as so-called generic (family) names motivated by the anthroponym Holender is unfounded, given that neither in Ukraine nor in Poland, where the greatest number of such names are attested, is there a single possessive oikonym like Holender (-ova, –ové), Holenderów.
Keywords: etnonymic toponyms, Dutch settlement (colony), ethnonym, oikonym, Podolsk region.
