Abstract: The article is attached to the problem of phonetic variability in the history of the Ukrainian language. It concerns main theoretical and practical standardization positions of O. Kobylianska, V. Stefanyk, B. Lepky, M. Kotsyubinsky, Panas Mirny, I. Nechuy-Levytsky and B. Hrinchenko, distinguished language personalities of the centuries boundary. The author describes functioning of the most common types of consonant phonetic variants, in particular caused by the assimilative processes and enthesis, dieresis or prosthetic. The article determines the relations between the usage of parallel forms by writers and lingual and extra-lingual factors.
The Ukrainian standard language of the late XIX – early XX century was at the stage of formation and active normalization. The unification of pluricentric lingual instruments became necessary in view of the socio-political situation, which was accompanied by the use of Ukrainians of several languages and two variants of the native language standard.
The tongue of prose was a major factor in the establishment of norms, and the variants spreading source in the literary tradition. Variance of words, the most striking expression of which was phonetic variability, was a characteristic sign of contemporary prose that was formed under the influence of different normalization traditions, the great dialect base, spelling diversity and other factors influencing its pluristic centricity.
Consonant phonetic variants arose in different historical periods, as a result of sound changes in the structure of words: assimilation of deafness, chastity, place and way of creation, palatality; dissimilation, epenthesis and dieresis. The prevalence of sound variants was evidenced by instability of certain lingual norms, in particular those phonetic norms concerning palatalize and dissimilation processes and simplification in consortium groups.
