Abstract: The article gives an account of principle achievements of the NASU Institute of the Ukrainian language from its founding in 1991. It tells about main directions, problems, and further per-spectives in the study of Ukrainian as well as indicating factors influencing revision of priorities in modern linguistics. The author emphasizes the need of comprehensive research tackling questions in all the fields of exploration of Ukrainian: its structure, modern usage, literary standard codification, history, areal and social differentiation, and style variation within stand-ard Ukrainian. Also, he stresses the strategic importance of consolidating Ukrainian’s status as the state language within the framework of non-conflictual society.
