Abstract: The paper analyzes main aspects of terminology as a science at different periods of the academic Ukrainian language studies development. The initial attempts to discuss theoretical and practical terminological problems in Ukraine were made in the middle of the XIX century. The scientific societies started collecting agricultural, natural, technical terminology and nomenclature. They formed the basis of the terminological file system of the Kiev Scientific Society. The paper describes evolution of terminological researches at the Ukrainian Scientific Language Institute of All-Ukrainian Academy of Science since its foundation in the Academy of Sciences. It also characterizes the most important achievements in the field of terminology by the researchers of Linguistics Institute, which was founded in 1930. It is stated that extra-linguistic factors, especially educational and ideological, had a great influence on presentation of terms in a specialized dictionary during this period. The terminological work of the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences, founded in 1991, is presented.

The most significant issues of the Ukrainian language studies are the theory and applied terminology problems caused by globalization and democratization of the Ukrainian society. They are: 1) language standard realization in the Ukrainian everyday language practice; 2) return to active use of some terms; 3) implementation of cognitive and functional approach into scientific researches in linguistics. The paper characterizes the main aspects of terminological studies nowadays, such as actualization of term history in the context of science development; activation of semasiologic researches in functional paradigm; study of LSP in anthropocentric paradigm, in particular correlation of the naïve and scientific knowledge according to experimental data investigation.

The prospects of further scientific work are drown. The scientific work should be focused on such problems: theoretical principals of scientific text corps working out; terminological databases and data banks forming; theoretical researches in terminography improving; principles of one or many languages dictionaries in different spheres of knowledge compiling; historical dictionary of linguistic terms compiling; teaching aids on terminology; the formation of theoretical basis for the “terminologist” introduction to the list of specialties the institutions of higher education of Ukraine prepare to.
