The actual problems of modern Ukrainian sociolinguistics

Abstract: The article under consideration summarizes the key stages of development of Ukrainian sociolinguistics, the study of the functioning of the Ukrainian language is characterized in the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, throughout the soviet period of time and up to the nowadays independent Ukraine. With the help of the example of problems that the department (group) of sociolinguistics of the Institute of the Ukrainian Language studies from the beginning of its existence, the directions of micro- and macrosociolinguistic research are outlined and the tasks of Ukrainian sociolinguistics are defined at the present stage. They include, notably, object and subject definition of historicalsociolinguistic, vocabulary grading research (streamlining terminology system), fundamental theoretical works creation, dictionaries and encyclopedias, empirical material accumulation and systematizing it in a database. Among the priorities which are set directly to the specialists of the Institute are: the study of the linguistic situation in the country, features of  the language practices in regions, state of functioning of the Ukrainian language in society within problem areas, the study of structural-semantic peculiarities and the variability of the Ukrainian language in terms of bi- and polylinguism using sociolinguistic methods, vocabulary  grading research of sociolinguistic on the basis of Ukrainian language, database of speech samples creation, spread of the knowledge of Ukrainian language and sociolinguistic processes,  associated with it in Ukrainian society and abroad.

Keywords: sociolinguistics, macro- and microsociolinguistics, linguistic situation, linguistic politics, sociological methods, oral speech, terminology of sociolinguistics, promotion of sociolinguistic knowledge.
