POLICY ON CONFLICT OF INTEREST

The Journal “Ukrainian language” has established clear principles and procedures for identifying and resolving potential and actual conflicts of interest among all participants in the editorial and publishing process, including authors, reviewers, the editor and members of the editorial board. A conflict of interest is anything that interferes or may interfere with the objective procedure for making a decision to publish research articles or other materials.

Conflicts of interest are factors that negatively affect the objectivity of editorial decisions or may be perceived as interference in the process of reviewing and approving manuscripts for publication.

A conflict of interest may concern organizations or individuals, including between the editor-in-chief, reviewers and the author. It is divided into the following possible categories:

Personal conflict: personal relationships (e.g., friends, family members, current or former managers, opponents) with authors, reviewers, editor-in-chief or members of the editorial board; personal beliefs (political, religious, ideological, etc.).

Professional conflict: a reviewer or editor-in-chief participated in or observed a particular study and is also a colleague of the author; may be a member of an organization representing the author’s interests.

Financial conflict: research grants from sponsoring organizations: government, non-governmental, research or charitable institutions; fees, any gifts and rewards.

A conflict of interest may also be related to other circumstances that influenced the decision-making of responsible persons.

Hate speech – spreading, inciting, promoting or justifying racial hatred, xenophobia, anti-Semitism or other types of hatred based on intolerance.

Sexual harassment – actions of a sexual nature, expressed verbally (threats, intimidation, obscene remarks), that humiliate or insult persons who are in a relationship of service or other subordination (Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring Equal Rights and Opportunities of Women and Men”: https://zakon.rada.gov.ua/laws/show/2866-15?lang=en#Text).

Harassment – behavior undesirable for a person, the purpose of which is to humiliate their human dignity on certain grounds or to create a tense, hostile, offensive or contemptuous atmosphere towards such a person (Law of Ukraine “On the Principles of Preventing and Counteracting Discrimination in Ukraine”: https://zakon.rada.gov.ua/laws/show/5207-17?lang=en#Text).

When submitting an article, the author must notify the editor-in-chief of all possible conflicts of interest. Appointed reviewers must also warn the editor-in-chief of possible conflicts of interest.

The author designated by the co-authors as responsible for correspondence with the editorial office (corresponding author) must declare possible conflicts of interest on their behalf.

Reviewers should not read the manuscript of an author who has a conflict of interest resulting from competitive, joint or other relationships / connections with any authors, companies or institutions related to the preparation of this manuscript.

The editor should not edit the manuscript if there is a conflict of interest caused by competitive, joint or other relationships with the author, institutions related to this research.

Decision on conflict of interest

The statement of a conflict of interest made by the author or reviewers is studied by the editor-in-chief of the journal.

In the case of substantiated statements of a conflict of interest with the editor-in-chief of the journal, they are studied by members of the editorial board of the publication or the management of the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the NAS of Ukraine.
