Abstract: The article is devoted to the issues of history and principles of compiling of the Supplement of the «Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language» (1970 ‒ 1980), which has been an authoritative and reference work for many decades. Analysis of experience in respect of supplements in Slavic lexicography has shown the need for major structural components: introduction, user instructions and lists of abbreviations.

One of the tasks posed by the lexicographers is the demonstration of the dynamics of the word semantic structure, not reiterating the already given information. In this connection the part of dictionary articles are formed analytically: the primary meanings are left in the main body of the dictionary, the new meanings are fixed in the Supplement. The words from the main registry are marked by asterisk, the place of the new meaning is shown by means of through numbering. Some entries, namely the words changed in connection with the development of science, technology, in general knowledge of the world, as well as under the influence of cultural and political changes in the Ukrainian society, are completely updated.

The article shows the role of quotations, which illustrate meanings, complement the explanations, and often indicate the approximate time of the active inclusion of lexeme in the language. Problems that arose before the compilers of the Supplement caused by the lack of staffing and technical support. It could be concluded that the Supplement, completing the stage of explanatory lexicography of the 20th century, gives rise to the work on a new Ukrainian language dictionary based on a modern sources, the formation of which has already begun at the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences. Taking into account the achievements and ways to overcome the problems will help to improve further vocabulary work.
