Abstract: The paper presents brief characteristic of the main direction of scientific researches in the Ukrainian terminology of the beginning of the 21st century. The mentioned period can be characterized by terminologists’ interest in traditional aspects of scientific studies and also by growing importance of functional-communicative and cognitive terminology.

Traditional / system-structural Ukrainian terminology actively develops semasiologic branch which is assumed to study problems of semantic, such as notion and meaning correlation, semantic of term development, semantic facts and lexica-semantic relationships (polysemy, homonymy, synonymy, antonymy, hyporo-hyponymy, terms unification etc.).

Functional-style branch in the modern Ukrainian terminology is represented by conceptions of style and stylistic differentiation of term.

Cognitive-discoursive paradigm of the modern linguistics makes it possible to think in a new way over traditional object of terminology – term and termsystem, to represent it in dynamic cooperation with textual and non-textual elements.

Important problem of the modern terminology is practical aspect: systematization, normalization and standardization of scientific terminology, taking out of it unjustified words, second birth of some forgotten or wrongly “repressed” terms; textbooks, workbooks, reference books, military statutes writing, the implementation of European standards on term and definition, the development of various legislative acts in the state language.

The current situation in Ukraine requires the creation of such dictionaries, the terms of which would meet several requirements: 1) would fully reflect the notion of the concept; 2) would fully comply with the norms and rules of the modern Ukrainian literary language; 3) would meet the requirements of both specialists of a particular industry and linguists.

Keywords: Ukrainian terminology, traditional terminology, cognitive branch, functional-communicative branch, terminological dictionary.
