Abstract: The article deals with the main problems of Ukrainian Dialectology from its origin to the present. The leading directions of Ukrainian Dialectology studies, which are the subject of the Department of Dialectology of the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, are highlighted, in particular: linguistic geography (the preparation of atlases of distinct languages and families of languages; the study of spatial differences of language, history of dialectal division); descriptive dialectology (the description of dialectal language elements, their relation to the literary language, interdialectal and interlingual contacts, etc.); dialectal lexicography (the making of dialectal dictionaries of different types); the formation of  national audio and text data bases (the basis for a qualitatively new study of the dialectal language and language in general in synchrony and diachrony). It is noted that Ukrainian Dialectology had uneven development. The tasks that are of priority for dialectologists are generalized; on the need for a clear understanding and outline of what to explore from the complex structure of the dialectal language, for what and with the help of which methods, techniques is accented. It is stated that during the last half century methodologicaly a transition from fragmentation, the opposition of the literary language / dialect to the system in recording, description and analysis of dialectal phenomena is happened.
