Abstract: The article highlights the achievements and prospects of modern academic lexicography. We consider specific dictionaries (explanatory, phraseological, synonymous, bilingual, neological, consolidated), published in recent decades.
Social, economic, cultural transformations to Ukrainian society stimulated  significant  changes in a language. The basic steps in the development of the author’s lexicography, the base of sources for the compilation of writing dictionaries are covered. The Index Dictionary as a normative reference source is based on the rules of modern Ukrainian spelling, although it reflects the vocabulary of the Ukrainian language over a long period of time, including a significant amount of Ukrainian vocabulary that is not part of the modern Ukrainian literary language. The Index Dictionary is an open lexicographical system and a strong base for the development of the modern integrated lexicography. A review of the materials of the periodical special edition “Lexicographic Bulletin”.

Keywords: lexicography, explanatory dictionary, bilingual dictionary, neological dictionary, The Index Dictionary, author’s lexicography, open lexicographical system.
