Abstract: The article considers the history and current state of Ukrainian traditional source study, the process of its formation as a separate direction of historical linguistics. It is shown that the original publication of the written records did not have an expressive linguistic orientation and more satisfied the requirements of other humanitarian disciplines: history, literary criticism. Focused primarily on the display of content, such publications almost completely leveled the language information inherent in the sources. For the first time, the principle of a complete mapping of the linguistic features of the sources was defined in the publications of paleographers, the first example of which was the publication of the Ostrom of the Gospel, published by A. Vostokov in 1876. A purely linguistic direction of unit source studies was formed only in the 60s of the last century. At this time, the series “Monuments of the Ukrainian language” was founded, and the first instructions for publishing linguistic sources M. Peschak, V. Rusanovsky were created. Rules for the publication of monuments of the Ukrainian language of the 14th and 18th centuries. (Kуiv, 1961). The authors have proposed, among other things, clear principles for the transliteration of written records of two periods in the development of the Ukrainian language – the 14th and 15th and 16th and 18th centuries. In accordance with this instruction in the “Monuments” series, publications were published up to 1995. After 1995, the publication followed another instruction V. Nimchuk. Rules for the publication of monuments written by the Ukrainian language and Church Slavonic Ukrainian edition (Kуiv, 1995). In it, the author presented the unitary source study as a coordinated system of methods and techniques, subordinate to specific tasks of the publication, developed the industry’s metalanguage (it is now the commonly accepted term “metagraphic”), systematized and clarified terminology equipment, defined the typology of sources for reproduction and the typology of traditional techniques.
