Abstract: The article deals with the development of historical and linguistic studies in Ukrainian studies, which was carried out by various scientific structural units of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine during 1918 – 2018. It was noted that their activity was focused on the development of three directions of historical linguistics: historical lexicography, linguistic unitary sources of history and the history of Ukrainian the language Historical lexicography, whose formation is associated with the activities of the Kiev prof. E. Timchenko, since 1958, continued to develop in Lviv (Department of Ukrainian Language at the Institute of Ukrainian Studies named after I. Krypyakevich of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine).
The unique linguistic source study as a separate scientific branch was finally formed in the 1960s, when the source bases for the diachronic study of the Ukrainian language were created in Ukraine. A special series – “Memoirs of the Ukrainian Language” – was initiated, in which up to today about 40 different-written written monuments of the XI – XIII, ХІV – ХVІІІ, ХІХ centuries have been published: church-religious texts, business writing, artistic and Homelike literature, Old Ukrainian lexicography and grammar, monuments of popular science and epistolary genres. Especially for their publication, the uniform rules have been developed and improved, and the industry is used to this day.
The study of the history of the Ukrainian language was primarily focused on the problems of Ukrainian glotogenesis, the dialectal basis of the literary language of Kievan Rus, and some phonetic and morphological phenomena of the Ukrainian language. In the 1980s, the fundamental academic study “History of the Ukrainian Language” in 4 volumes (Phonetics, Morphology, Lexics and Phraseology, Syntax) was published on the comprehensive study of the formation and development of the basic structural levels of the Ukrainian language based on the data of Ukrainian dialects. and writing sights. The monograph synthesizes the achievements of not only Eastern Slavic linguistics, but also Slavic studies and Indo-European studies in general. This made possible the expansion of the historical perspective of the development of the Ukrainian language system to the Slavonic, and even to the Indo-European period.
Today, the department of history of the Ukrainian language systematically studies the derivation system of the Ukrainian language, continues the publication of the most important monuments.
